Embracing diversity: Howard senior living facility stands out for inclusive hiring practices

HOWARD (WLUK) — A Howard employer is being recognized for its inclusive hiring practices.

New Perspective Senior Living is one of more than 19 businesses across the state celebrating the efforts of Wisconsin employers recruiting and hiring people with disabilities.

The facility, which specializes in senior independent living, assisted living and memory care, hired six people with disabilities in recent years, some through connections with Aspiro in Green Bay.

Those roles include dining services, maintenance, cleaning and helping with resident activities.

But the most important role, executive director Darin Duvall says, is making connections with the residents.

“That’s really where my relationship with Aspiro started was the staffing crisis, the staffing struggle and they had people available and again, it goes back to what we look for in employees; dependable, reliable, want to be at work and all these kids from Aspiro fit that,” Duvall said. “Again, as an employer, that’s what I’m looking for and there’s so many of them that just want to be part of something and when they do, they’re all in.”

Nearly 10% of Wisconsin residents between the ages of 18 and 65 have a disability. Last year, more than 2,000 employers across the state created more disability inclusive workplaces.

Duvall says he’s always looking for good help, so if you’re looking for a job at New Perspective, you can apply online or stop by the facility at 2790 Elm Tree Hill.
