Get Out and Explore: Outdoor Activities in Minneapolis

With warm weather and sunny skies, get out and enjoy outdoor activities in the Twin Cities. If you are coming in for a visit, find some outdoor activities to enjoy your stay and explore the city. Or if you are local and looking for something new to do with your loved ones, consider trying one of the many outdoor things to do in Minneapolis this summer.

Take Them Out to the Ballpark

Attend a game at Target Field to cheer on the Minnesota Twins. Get kid and senior discounts on tickets and accommodations for people with disabilities at the ballpark. You can find local food like polish sausages from Kramarczuk’s. Or stick to the basics with stadium hot dogs, peanuts and beer. Choose a home game and purchase tickets online or at a nearby reseller.

Go for a Walk in the Woods

With a vibrant outdoor scene, the Minneapolis-area is full of hiking and walking trails. Minnehaha Park offers the biggest collection of trails with the best hikes to see the Mississippi River, limestone bluffs and 53-foot-tall Minnehaha Falls. If you need wheelchair accessibility, see our last blog post featuring Minneapolis walking trails for plenty of paved trails to explore.

Experience International Flavors

If your loved ones are more active and adventurous, discover the diverse cuisine Minneapolis offers with a Twin Cities Food Tour. Savor good food while strolling through historic neighborhoods and learning about noteworthy architecture. Be sure to dress comfortably and wear walking shoes because this tour lasts three hours.

Appreciate the Outdoor Arts

Last summer, the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden at the Walker Art Center reopened after a two-year, $33 million renovation. The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden & Wurtele Upper Garden is the crown jewel of the city’s park system, bringing the city’s treasured park system and culture life together. Learn more about the sculptures and installations featured in the Garden with a self-guided tour.

Tour World-Class Gardens

Without kids around, the zoo may be the last place you want to visit. However, Minneapolis’ Como Park Zoo and Conservatory features more than a dozen different gardens, each with a unique theme or display. At Como Park, you will find exotic plants, tropical flowers and everything in between. Admission to Como Park is technically free, but a $2–3 donation is appreciated.

Try a New Outdoor Activity

Did you know Minneapolis is home to the largest park system in the country? The Minneapolis Parks Department hosts a variety of outdoor and recreational programs, offering education and instruction for residents. You can learn to canoe, birdwatch, fish, and snowshoe. If you or your loved ones are more seasoned in outdoor activities, consider using Minneapolis’ Parks and Recreation services to enjoy outdoor pastimes.
There are plenty of outdoor things to do in the Minneapolis area with your loved one, so plan a visit and get outside.
